Art and Culture activities in Santorini

Santorini is a place of indisputable beauty. During your stay at Esperas hotel, it is guaranteed that you will feel rejuvenated and relaxed under the colourful Santorini skies. Whether you are staying in our Studios, Cave Houses or Honeymoon Suites you will have the opportunity to enjoy stunning views of the Aegean Sea, and to witness unforgetable sunsets.
Nonetheless, the island has a lot more to offer than its beauty. Santorini’s rich cultural past has been followed by a vibrant artistic present, allowing the island’s visitor to attend a variety of contemporary art exhibitions and cultural events. You may choose among music concerts, performance spaces, cultural festivals and modern galleries.

Let’s take a look at some contemporary cultural events that you could enjoy while staying at our hotel.

Ifestia Festival

As you are enjoying the view from your room’s private terrace, you will notice the unique texture and colour of Santorini’s land. The unique landscape of Santorini is due to a volcanic eruption that took place in the mid-second millennium BCE. The eruption is to be considered one of the largest volcanic eruptions on Earth. On the 15th of September thousands of Fireworks erupt on Santorini’s skies in celebration of the volcanic explosion. You can enjoy the fireworks while you can also attend the artistic events of the Ifestia festival, including a re-enchantment of the volcanic explosion.

Megaron Gyzi Festival

This festival is hosted at the Gyzi Mansion which is located in the centre of Fira.
It takes place during the whole summer season. It includes theatrical events, lectures but mostly focuses on music concerts. The musical events are both international and Greek. Among others, live music shows include contemporary Greek music, classical guitar, cello performances, Cretan lyra and Jazz music.

The International Music Festival of Santorini

When it comes to live music Santorini has a lot more to offer. If you enjoy listening to Jazz but also appreciate classical music, do not miss the Santorini International Music festival. It has been taking place for more than 40 years in the Petros M. Nomikos Conference Centre, a historic building with excellent acoustics.
Each September, both tourists and locals are able to experience elegant performances by chamber orchestras, well known choirs, choirs of Byzantine music, jazz and tango groups or classical violin and piano musicians.

Santorini Arts Factory Events

-Industrial Museum:
This unique venue used to be a tomato factory and it has now evolved into an artistic hub. It is considered to be the core of Santorini’s cultural activity. During a visit at this unique space, you can explore the old factory which has now turned into an Industrial Tomato Museum. The museum allows you to travel back to the industrial past of Santorini and learn all about the production methods of Santorini’s most valued product, the tomato.

-Music festival:
This historic space has also been transformed into a contemporary performance venue. Santorini Arts Factory, hosts a variety events where Greek and international artists perform attracting both young and mature audiences. It has hosted Jazz and Blues festivals, Urban and traditional Greek music concerts, video art festivals, flamenco and contemporary dance events. Non-matter the genre of the event you attend, the factory’s unique architecture and its vibrant energy will leave a lasting impression on you.

-Workshops and Exhibitions:
The space also hosts contemporary art exhibitions as well as workshops for adults and children. Some of the activities include songwriting workshops, marionette doll workshops, painting exhibitions for children and Greek shadow theatre workshops.

Contemporary art galleries

After spending the day at the beach and before you enjoy a luxurious dinner at our Ombra restaurant, why not spend some time exploring the island’s contemporary art galleries? Usually, visitors spent most of their time becoming familiar with the archaeological and transitional aspects of Santorini. While the island’s rich history is worth exploring, so is its artistic present. Santorini’s modern art galleries are filled with inspiring work by resident artists and vibrant new exhibitions.

Steps to Art, Oia

This establishment showcases metal sculptures, volcanic sand jewellery, and painting

S.M.A.G Spira Marble Art Gallery, Pyrgos

Here you can find unique marble Sculptures, housed in an intriguing building that dates back to 1914.

MΑΤΙ

This gallery exhibits an extraordinary approach to visual art and sculpture exploring human behaviour and human interaction with nature. It carries out studies, organizes exhibitions, installations and projects.

Santorini Photo Tour – Black and White Photography

At a time when we use our phones to take hundreds of pictures during our vacations, photographs become more about quantity than quality. This experience will help you re-evaluate the idea of photography. Join an expedition that will provide you with all the knowledge you need to produce strong architectural and landscape photos. This photo-tour is a great way to learn new skills. It will also leave you with a tangible and artistic souvenir. The shape of the island’s land will be on the picture and the colours of the sky will always remain in your memory.

We know that relaxing at Esperas unique cave pool while gazing the caldera will take up most of your time while in Santorini. But Santorini’s beauty derives as much from its majestic landscapes as it does from its vibrant cultural platform.

Wine tasting in Santorini

Who doesn’t love good wine and what a better place to try some fine wine than Santorini and its beautiful views?
Santorini has a long standing history for the production of good wines, because of its unique microclimate and the very specific soil created by its volcanic nature. This means that some of the grape varieties grown in Santorini are very distinctive, which, of course, is reflected on Santorini’s tasteful wine varieties and their unique aromas. Some of the best wines of Santorini include Mavrotragano, Mandilaria, Assyrtiko, and, of course, Santorini’s traditional Vinsanto. Visiting one or more of Santorini’s wineries will give you an insight into the island’s wine history and production. The most important part is that you will have the chance to taste some amazing wine varieties!

So, what are some of the most popular wine tasting options in Santorini?

Koutsoyannopoulos Wine Museum is located in Vothonas, a small village in the centre of Santorini. It is found in a 300 meter long labyrinth, eight meters below the ground. Throughout the museum, visitors can find interesting facts and information about the history of wine making in Santorini, starting from the 1600s. Guests have the opportunity to learn about the stages of wine making, the tools, and machinery used, and eventually, at the end of the tour, try four of the best wine varieties produced in the Koutsoyannopoulos winery.

Santo Winery offers breathtaking views of the Caldera and the cliffs, creating the perfect setting for wine tasting. It also has an amazing deli shop, where you can find all sorts of local delicacies and, of course, the wines you will try!

Art Space Santorini is an old winery dating all the way back to 1861 with an art gallery displaying paintings and sculptures from Greek and international artists. Visitors have the opportunity to explore a combination of art and wine, as a modern winery with high quality products can be found in the premises.

Domaine Sigalas winery is located in Oia, just a ten minute drive away from Esperas Santorini. This winery produces high-quality wines that are exported internationally, in Europe, Asia, and America. The wine tasting experience includes a tour of the winery and a sample of their products in combination with a sample of local culinary specialties. It takes place in a wonderful setting in the middle of the vineyard.

Apart from the wine tastings organised by wineries in Santorini, you can also find some really exciting wine tours, which will give you the chance to explore more than one winery, and of course, try even more wine varieties!

The Esperas Hotel Concierge will help to you organize the most memorable wine tasting tours among other interesting activities.

Hiking from Oia to Fira

Santorini is probably one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, with some of the most breath-taking views and picturesque villages. Travelling to Santorini, everyone expects to witness the world-famous sunset from Oia and explore the scenic Caldera. Hiking from Oia to Fira is one of the highlights of visiting Santorini and one of the best ways to explore the island and the Caldera, passing through the villages of Imerovigli, Firostefani, and of course, Fira.

The hiking trail from Oia to Fira is approximately 10km and is a fairly easy hike considering that for the most part the path is either similar to a sidewalk or there is cobblestone. The entire hike should take around 4 hours depending on your pace and how many stops and detours you make along the way. The best season for hiking in Santorini is from March to early June and from September to October, as these months are not too hot like the summer months or too cold like the completely off-season winter months. If you are planning to do the hike during the summer, however, it is best to avoid the middle of the day, as the sun is too strong. You could set off early in the morning, keeping in mind that in July and August it starts getting very hot by 11am. Alternatively, you could hike in the afternoon and arrive in Fira just in time for the sunset.

The path is very easy to follow by yourself, as there are several marks along the route, especially at the most critical junctions. There is no need to have a map with you as the path goes along the rim of the Caldera, keeping you on the right track. You will have some opportunities for a small detour for exploring, for instance when you get to the Skaros Rock. You are very unlikely to get lost during the hike, but if you want to stay on the safe side and have some professional guidance, there are some paid tours that are accompanied by local guides.

Starting from Santorini’s most graphic village, you will head south towards the Perivolas market, which is the last market you should see in Oia as you embark on your adventure. Walking along the Caldera, the Aegean Sea should always be on your right-hand side and you will have some great views of the neighbouring island of Thirassia. You will follow the small dirt path, which will eventually lead you to the main road, where you will have to walk for only about five minutes (until you find the San Antonio hotel). If you are walking in the morning, the road should be quiet, but always be aware of the cars.

Getting back on the path, make sure to remain on the side of the Caldera if you want to make the most of your hike and not miss out on the majestic views our island has to offer –even though the Caldera path is slightly trickier. At this point you should find the Church of Prophet Elias and the Church of Agios Antonios, a bit later on, which are both worth a stop to enjoy the magnificent views over the Caldera cliff. Moving on, you will find Imerovigli, a truly charming village, approximately 70 –minutes walking from Oia. Entering Imerovigli from the north, you will meet Avaton Hotel. Here, you can either follow the right side of the path, sticking to the Caldera for a more scenic walk; or you can take the path to the right that leads towards the centre of Imerovigli, if you need to restock your snacks or water.

If you choose to remain on the Caldera rim, heading South you will see the famous Skaros Rock on your right hand side. This detour would add approximately thirty, slightly challenging minutes to your hike, which we totally encourage! It offers some of the best and most panoramic views of the Aegean and of Santorini, as you can see Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli from a distance.

Further south, you will find Firostefani, which has essentially become a continuation of Fira. In Firostefani, you should also find the Monastery of Saint Nicholas, which was founded in the 17th century and was the second monastery built in Santorini! No more than 10 minutes after Firostefani, you will finally arrive in Fira, Santorini’s largest town. Here, you can finally reward yourself with a wholehearted breakfast or lunch, or a stunning sunset (Oia sunsets are still better!) if you choose to hike in the afternoon.

No matter what, the hike from Oia to Fira, or from Fira to Oia is totally worth the sweat! It is definitely the most scenic route you can follow in Santorini, going through some of the island’s most picturesque towns and villages. The views you will witness will most definitely remain in your memory until the next time you decide to visit us!

Don’t forget (!):

No matter when you decide to do this hike, you need to make sure that you bring with you water and a few snacks. Make sure that you are wearing proper clothing and comfortable shoes. It is also very important to protect your skin from the sun, because while walking, and especially if it is windy, you might not realize that it is burning. Most importantly, do not forget your camera! During this hike, you will witness some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes, combining the Aegean’s endless blue and the graphic villages of Santorini, with their whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches.

When people think of Santorini, the first thing to come in mind is the impressive caldera with the white villages and the romantic sunset. In fact, millions of tourists head to Santorini each summer to see the most impressive sunset in the world from the top of Oia village or from a private suite balcony, like the balcony of our suites in Esperas Hotel.

However, what visitors should also have in mind is that Santorini is an island with long history and authentic character of its own. There are many landmarks and archaeological sites in Santorini that are definitely worth a visit.

Here are our favorite landmarks to visit in Santorini.

1. The Volcano

Could you come to Santorini and not visit the famous volcano? The very special thing is that only the top of Santorini volcano is visible, as the rest of the caldera is sunken and filled in with water from the Aegean Sea. Therefore, the volcano is visited only with excursion boats that depart from the main port of Santorini or from the old port of Fira town, the capital of the island. Get on this boat and take your chance to walk on an active volcano!

2. The Minoan Site of Akrotiri

The archaeological site of Akrotiri in Santorini is among the most interesting archaeological places in Greece. Akrotiri was a wealthy town until it was totally covered with volcanic lava due to the eruption of Thera, around 1,500 BC. The archaeological excavations revealed a busy and developed settlement under tones of volcanic ash. In fact, many historians believe that Ancient Akrotiri is strongly connected to the myth of the lost Atlantis.

3. The Santo Wines Winery

Due to its special climate and the volcanic soil, Santorini is a popular wine-producing place. Take a drive around the island and you will see many hectares of vineyards as well as lots of wineries. A very popular winery in Santorini is the Santo Wines Winery. Located outside the village of Pyrgos, Santo Wines offer wine-tasting tours and an ample terrace with caldera views. In fact, the view from this winery is so magnificent that it is a popular place for wedding ceremonies in Santorini.

During your holiday on our island, take the chance to discover the impressive landmarks and hidden archaeological sites in Santorini. You will be impressed by the secret beauty of our island!

Things to pack when traveling to Santorini

When organizing your trip to Santorini there are many things that you have to research. One of them is things to pack. With the following advice, you can cross out this consideration because we provide you with all useful tips.

Clothing

Most tourists visit Santorini from April to October, when the weather is generally warm. However, April and October visitors might experience lower temperatures and a few showers. Therefore, we suggest you pack light clothes, such as a couple of summer dresses, shorts and few tops for the ladies, or short trousers and T-shirts for men. As a summer breeze blows in the evenings all over the Aegean islands, also pack a light summer jacket. Light pajamas would also be nice, but if you want to save space in your suitcase, you can sleep in with a T-shirt.

Beachwear

You surely can’t come to Santorini for summer holidays without beachwear! Make sure you have a couple of swimsuits, plus a sarong for the ladies. It would also be wise to have a beach towel, beach bag and sunscreen with you, but if you don’t already have them, there are plenty of shops in Santorini to buy these items from here. There are some great beaches in Santorini, so be prepared for enjoyable hours at the sea or Esperas Santorini Hotel pool!

Shoes

Take with you a pair of flip-flops for the beach and a pair of trainers for walking. Santorini has many paved paths, so trainers are most recommended. You will also need them for hiking at the volcano or the Oia – Fira hiking path. For a night out, we suggest comfortable shoes for the ladies. High-heels are not easy to walk on the paved paths of our villages, so if you can’t live without your heels, a pair of platforms would be better than high-heel shoes.

Other things to pack for Santorini

Esperas Santorini Hotel offers high-quality toiletries to its guests, so you will probably not need shampoo and shower gel, unless if you want to pack the travel size products.
What you will probably need during your trip to Santorini is a body lotion as your skin might get dehydrated from sea and sun. Also pack a face cream, hairbrush, toothbrush and few other personal items.
If you are traveling with tech devices, you need a European adapter.
And of course, make sure your mobile, tablet or camera has enough space for the hundreds of photos that you will take during your Santorini holidays!

These are the main things to pack when traveling to Santorini, and generally when traveling to Greece for summer holidays. Just remember to take our advice and pack lightly! You probably know from your traveling experience so far that, during holidays, we usually need much fewer things than what we pack in our suitcase.

The Best Beaches of Santorini

Santorini island is mostly famous for its incredible sunset and the impressive caldera. Due to its natural beauty and the high-quality tourist services, this is the top Greek destination, visited by millions of tourists every year. Although Santorini is branded as a romantic and honeymoon destination, it is also a nice summer destination with many organized beaches. The most organized beaches of Santorini are found on the southern side of the island. The majority of these beaches is large in size and extends for many miles. Here are some of the best beaches to visit in Santorini.

The Red Beach

The Red Beach is one of the most impressive Santorini beaches. It got its name due to the unique landscape with the red and black volcanic pebbles. This is one of the most visited beaches on the island and due to its small size it gets very crowded, especially in the peak season. A visit to the Red Beach is usually combined with a visit to the closeby archaeological site of Akrotiri, the Minoan town that was covered with ashes during the volcanic eruption of Thera in around 1,500 BC. The Red Beach in Santorini is organized with umbrellas and sun beds. Access is easy by bus or car, however, the seashore is a bit uncomfortable with large stones. Next to the Red Beach is the White Beach, with white volcanic rocks, unorganized and less visited.

Kamari Beach

One of the longest and most organized beaches in Santorini is Kamari. Located on the southern eastern side of the island, Kamari is lined up with taverns, restaurants, beach bars and accommodation units. This is an organized beach with umbrellas, sun beds and water sports, great to spend a day at the sea.

Perissa Beach

Right next to Kamari is the beach of Perissa. This is also among the most popular beaches in Santorini, organized with umbrellas, sun beds, restaurants and many tourist facilities. Both Kamari and Perissa are accessible with public transportation.

Eros Beach

Although this is among the least known beaches in Santorini, Eros Beach is actually a wonderful place to enjoy your swim. It is located on the southern side of the island and is actually a continuation of Vlyhada beach. Eros beach is partly organized and distinguishes for its fantastic volcanic formations. This pebbled beach has deep waters and a famous beach bar on the shore, Theros Wave Bar.

Of course, these are only few of the lovely beaches in Santorini. A drive around the island will bring you to many famous or less famous coasts, so that you enjoy a long, relaxing day at the sea. Feel free to explore and enjoy!

3. The Food

While you relax and pamper each other, give into to some “gluttony”. Try all the traditional tastes and enjoy the journey with all your senses. Santorini is also known for the production of natural ingredients like “cherry tomatoes” and the “white aubergine”. There is an abundance of restaurants that will offer you a great taste experience. And there is Ombra Restaurant in Esperas Hotel that provides you both the amazing and romantic views as well as a modern twist to the traditional tastes of Santorini.

4. The Wines

Tender moments of your honeymoon are perfectly matched with a glass of wine. When that wine is local the experience is complete. Don’t miss out on the wine tours and wine tastings taking place across the island. Sorts that are produced indigenously in Santorini are at your disposal. Taste them and learn how they come from a vine to a wine. The island produces world class wine that is worth tasting and enjoying.

5 reasons NOT to visit Santorini

Santorini can be a magnificent place indeed to spend your summer holidays. So much has already been written regarding the reasons why you should visit this magical island but are they really true? Take a little time and ponder a little bit about all these perks. Are they really what you need during your holidays? Consume this article at your own risk, since it was released on April Fool’s Day.

1. The Sunset

Let’s begin by decomposing the sunset as a natural phenomenon. A sunset is the moment when the sun sets and night comes. Period. Nothing unique about that. Santorini’s sunset and the view from Esperas Hotel in Oia are world famous. For what? The moment that the day gives its place to the night, all these colors fill the sky and the sun looks like a gigantic flaming ball. What is so special about that? Plus it happens every single day. Ok, a sunset does give the sky a sensational palette of colors ranging from gold and peach to purple and the gentle sea breeze hits your face. This image brings feelings up to the surface. You start feeling all romantic and tender and loving and soft. A state of melancholy and nostalgia kicks in. Hey, you are on holidays! Do you really need to witness marvels of nature and be overwhelmed with feelings? And do you really want to do all that at Esperas Hotel where you get to enjoy it in the privacy of your own terrace?

2. The Stairs

Let us try and describe Santorini. This island is a giant black rock with white Cycladic houses and blue dome churches on top. In order to go up to or down to the sea level you have to have either drive, ride a donkey or walk. Imagine walking up and down the steps, through whitewashed houses, under the clear blue summer sky. Walking through cobblestone alleys and discovering local shops and restaurants on your way. Boy, that sounds not only exhausting but also time-consuming. Holidays are not made for new experiences.

Now imagine that there are places in Santorini, where your only option is to walk these whitewashed steps just to get where you want. You have to do that while taking in an amazing view of the Caldera l. During your walk, you get a first-hand glimpse of houses of locals, their yards, and everyday habits. They might even talk to you and offer you something from their garden. Never take something from strangers, wow that’s scary. To sum it up, all this walking and climbing and seeing new things or meeting with different people, can be a little bit disturbing, don’t you think..?

3. The Caldera

Think about this for a second. You are on an island with a dormant, yet active volcano. Between Santorini and Thirasia (a small island across Santorini) the ocean bed is actually part of this land because it sunk thousands of years ago! From Esperas Hotel you have the best view to the Caldera, and this setting. So, you have the best view to the place where Atlantis probably lays. Well, that is something. When you are in Santorini, you stand on volcanic ground and witness layers of red and black volcanic rocks everywhere. Have you heard of the saying “the vibes on this island are amazing?” Yes , they are because they are volcanic vibes.

Not to mention all the colorful beaches that have been created due to the volcano. There is the Red beach, the White beach, the Black beach and the water on all of them is crystal clear. All these colors and the fact that it is one big volcanic rock, are valid reasons not to visit this place. Well, no thank you! All this natural energy and uniquely colored beaches are not the best ideas.

4. The Cave Houses and Traditional Living

You decided to go on holidays to Santorini. Well, you are very brave! Overcoming that this island was formulated by a volcanic eruption and all the feelings and great memories it will bestow upon you, you start looking for the traditional lifestyle. Let me give you two words. Cave. Houses. That is the traditional way of living in Santorini. Do you know what that means, apart from the fact that you might spend your holidays in a cave? These houses are part of traditional Santorini, they are white and underground with curves and domed facades and sometimes they even come with a cave pool. Hmmm… Allow me to show you a photo and you can understand my terror (actually at Esperas Hotel the have also a cave in their pool)

Cave house, cave pool, privacy, and comfort. You are on holidays!! You don’t need privacy or comfort for that matter. Esperas Hotel offers you traditional accommodation with comfort and there are also quite a few cave houses/rooms you can stay in. You don’t need to get in touch with the traditional living of every place you visit while doing it in comfort and style, do you? You just need a bed… and safety. Don’t get me started on the volcano again.

5. Food and Wine

Do you know what a fresh cherry tomato is, or a white aubergine, or capers? Most probably you never tasted them in your life. So what? You have survived and managed to get this age you are today, all healthy and strong without ever tasting or eating these things. Yes, of course, they originated in Santorini and this is the only place you can find them fresh but it’s not like you need them. Having all these traditional dishes of Santorini with the remarkable taste of fresh ingredients in a restaurant like Ombra, with the most amazing view to the Caldera (you know, danger) is an experience you’d better leave out of your bucket list. The wine in Santorini is also world famous (this is one popular island!). You have heard of VInsanto wine, it comes from here. But who wants to drink unique wine during the hot summer days from the place where it is actually produced? No, you don’t need that. A glass of water is fine and enough.

Now we covered all the grounds with the reasons not to visit Santorini and Esperas Hotel. The sunset, the tastes, the view, the unique experiences cannot be what you are looking for in your holidays and the accommodation you choose to stay at. We hope we convinced you and remember… stay safe!

Santorini: Is this Atlantis?

A mythical question

Santorini is a magical island. From the sunset to the natural setting, everything has a vibrating energy that mystifies you. Enjoy the magic by staying in Esperas Hotel, which is situated in one of the most remarkable sites in Santorini, overlooking its famous Caldera. One of the most popular legends related to the Santorini Caldera, is that on the ocean floor lays the lost city of Atlantis. Jacques-Yves Cousteau started an expedition in finding the long lost Golden City and visited Santorini in an effort to prove this theory.

Plato’s Atlantis

The story of Atlantis comes to us from Plato; the greek philosopher who used dialogues with arguments and reasons to demonstrate his political and social thoughts. In one of his works Critias and Timaeus discuss stories of Athens and its relationship to other cities. One of the cities mentioned is Atlantis. According to Plato, it is situated at the front of the “Pillars of Hercules” (it is said that it is the Straits of Gibraltar) and that it was a powerful naval empire. The city or nation of Atlantis managed to attack and siege a lot of other cities surrounding it but never managed to conquer Athens, according to Plato. Atlantis was lost in one day and one night because a massive explosion and tsunami vanished it literally from the face of the earth. Plato wrote his story around 360 B.C. but Atlantis has destroyed thousands of years prior to Plato’s time.

The Quest

The fact that a land, a whole city, has never been mentioned before and is first discussed thousands of years after it disappeared, causes a lot of debate. Was Atlantis fictional or not? Another debate is whether it was in Santorini, or Spain or even if the Atlantians were the Minoan civilization of Crete. Which in fact, was destroyed by a great tsunami created after a volcanic eruption in Santorini. The same volcanic eruption that sunk a big part of Santorini itself and left it in the ocean floor.

A popular theory is that in Santorini’s ocean floor lays the true Atlantis. Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a great fan of this mystery and searched passionately for it during his career. One of his stops was the magical Santorini. The Calypso research ship, his crew and greek divers spent months researching the bottom of the Santorini Caldera. Jacques-Yves Cousteau fell in love with the island and was initially convinced Atlantis was here. He was dedicated to finding (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1532476/) what the world was looking for centuries. Eventually, he did not find robust evidence that of that theory and continued his quest in other places. However, his love for Santorini, his noble character and the respect for underwater life and history left an impact on all parties involved.

His son Pierre-Yves Cousteau alongside with a group of divers placed a memorial plaque on the sea floor of Kamari in the name of his father Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Later in time, the team Cousteau Divers, led by Pierre-Yves Cousteau started the projected of a Maritime protected Area, which is supported by the professional fishermen of Santorini.Jacques-Yves Cousteau passed his love to the sea and Santorini to his son, who is now following the legacy of his father and wishes to protect the maritime life of the island.

The tantalizing mystery of Atlantis is yet to be resolved, many believe it did not exist and others are still looking trying to interpret the only reference there is, that of Plato. Whether you believe that Atlantis really existed or not, it is worth visiting the mystifying island that is as rich and as powerful as Atlantis was. Santorini is a jewel in the Aegean sea and it is worth staying in Esperas Hotel, watching the sunset and the Caldera, learning and thinking of all the legends and important figures that were drawn to this island.

We invite you to read 8 secret facts about Santorini.

7 Villages in Santorini to Visit

Are you traveling to Santorini? We present you these 7 beautiful and unique villages of the island to visit and explore. Let’s begin our journey from Oia, which is the gem of the island and where Esperas Hotel is located. We will go through Fira, Pyrgos, Akrotiri, Messaria, Emporio and our last stop will be Megalochori.

1. Oia

Oia is the most popular village in Santorini. The best caldera and sunset views are here. Those magnetic views and its placement on the top of a cliff is what makes it distinct and extraordinary. Following the 1956 earthquake Oia, struggled with the restoration of establishments and houses but the outcome compensated the efforts. It is one of the most stunning Cycladic Villages (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/greece/oia/introduction). It can be quite crowded as most visitors come to Oia to enjoy the world-renowned sunset. But if you are staying at Esperas Hotel you have a first-hand peaceful experience, of what it looks like to gaze at the most colorful sunset. The caldera makes it even more magical, as in the ocean floor part of Santorini lays underneath layers of lava. The cobblestone streets of Oia have plenty of small shops, taverns and restaurants. Below Oia, is the small Ammoudi, a small port with spectacular taverns that serve fresh fish. In Oia you can also visit the Maritime Museum where you can see and learn the naval history of the island.

2. Fira

This is the capital of Santorini. Fira is the commercial and cultural center of the island. The views to caldera and the sunset are also great here. The main attractions of the capital are the museums, the galleries, the bars, the restaurants, and shops. If you want to get a feel of what the center of a Cycladic island is, you must visit Fira. It sort of brings out the urban vibe in an island setting, with amazing views. The town is vibrant and has a lot to offer. Visit the Archaelogical Museum and the Megaron Gyzi Museumto understand what Santorini looked liked in the past. Fira too, suffered greatly from the 1956 earthquake. However, a lot of 18th-century houses were saved and blend perfectly with the restored environment. You can also visit the blue dome churches and the Catholic Cathedral, which are of exemplary beauty.

3. Pyrgos

Pyrgos is a village located at the highest point of Santorini. The view is panoramic and you can see all the way to Oia, even though it is half an hour drive from Pyrgos. If you want to see all of Santorini in one glimpse, then this is the place to visit. It is a picturesque village with one of the five castles of the island. The ruins of Kasteli Castle, are on the hilltop of the village and it is worth visiting it. Pyrgos is a small traditional village with only a few shops, some taverns, cafes and restaurants. Visit the Prophitis Elias monastery, built in 1711 with great historical and commercial value for the island.

4. Akrotiri

The village of Akrotiri is a very quite place with not much to see. It is a typical not very touristic village, where people live and work as farmers or craftsmen. The taverns are only a few and there are hardly any shops. The importance of Akrotiri though is in the prehistoric settlement before entering the contemporary village.

This settlement is considered to be one of the greatest and most important of the Aegean. It was wealthy with magnificent infrastructure for its time and had a strong social and economic power. Akrotiri was considered to be a big port of the time and communicated with various other cities. The development of Akrotiri ended violently by the great volcanic eruption, at the end of the 17th century BC. The disaster was tremendous. Half the island sunk and the settlement was covered with volcanic dust and other materials. However, it was those volcanic extracts that preserved ancient Akrotiri in such a good condition, to be excavated and found first by the French geologist F. Fouque in 1867. The major revelations came later in time in 1967, when Spyridon Marinatos started a large scale and revealed the true extent of this settlement.

5. Emporio

This is the largest village of Santorini and perhaps it would explain its name, as Emporio in Greek means trade. As the largest village, it gained the privilege of being the trade center of the island a few centuries ago. Here are several bars, cafes and taverns where you can enjoy tasty dishes with some quality local wine. In Emporio is another Kasteli (castle) and ruins of a square tower called Goulas. On the hillside one can see a string of old windmills and at the village entrance one encounters the really small but impressive, Agios Nicholaos Marmaritis church (https://www.santorini.com/churches/agios_nikolaos.htm).

6. Messaria

Messaria village is situated in the middle of Santorini. Everyone and everything goes through Messaria. This is a place of vineyards and most of the locals are in the winemaking business. If you visit this village it is worth going through the streets to look and photograph some of the most beautiful mansions and buildings. They have been restored or preserved after the big 1956 earthquake. One of these is the Argyros Mansion Museum, which belonged to the wine merchandiser George Argyros and was built in 1860. It was deserted after the earthquake, but the Greek Ministry of Culture, restored it transforming it into a museum everyone can visit. It is now owned by Manolis Argyros.

7. Megalochori

The pristine beauty of Megalochori will amaze you. It is a small and very traditional place, where you can feel the local way of life. This village is surrounded by vineyards and wineries with the most popular being The Boutari Winery, the Gavalas Winery and the Venetsanos Winery. The churches here are magnificent and it is worth visiting the cave church Panagia Plaka.

Travel to Santorini and explore the island and all its glory with Esperas Hotel and Oia as your starting point, and your “pit-stop” from one village to another. Enjoy the uniqueness of Santorini.

Ifestia festival in Santorini celebrates the volcano

The volcano of Santorini is one of its most important landmarks. It is dormant but active and has brought the island to the form it is today. The volcano is celebrated on the island and Esperas Hotel offers you some information regarding these festivities.

The Island and the Volcano

The island of Santorini is like Phoenix, the mythical bird, that it has been reborn from its ashes one too many times. Due to a variety of calamities that stroke the island over the centuries, Santorini has suffered geologically, financially and socially. However, it managed to stand back on its feet and maintain the height it deserves, each and every time. Some of the most important destructions the island has faced came from the various volcano eruptions, with the last taking place in the 1950s. Two million years of volcanic activity have formulated the ocean floor and the island itself. That is two million years that you see in front of you when you reach the island. What was once one whole island is now separated in fragments and even new volcanic islands have been created. All these wonders of nature are right under your feet and in front of your eyes.

Santorini Volcano History from Nikos Korakakis on Vimeo.

The Festival

No matter the damages, the island has such a strong and positive vibe that it celebrates these natural wonders. It has managed to transform the negative impact of the volcano into a positive one. Everybody recognises that Santorini would not be what it is today if it weren’t for the volcano. So the island shows its gratitude by organising a festival to honour exactly that. This impressive festival is taking place once a year in Santorini, it’s called “Ifaisteia” (which means Volcanoes). The festival lasts a few days and consists of concerts, photography, art exhibitions as well as dance performances. The culminating moment of the festival is the last day when a representation of the volcanic eruptions is taking place. It is a breathtaking and majestic apocalypse of a series of fireworks, that imitate the lava and fire the volcano spit in every eruption. This lasts several minutes and you can see a variety of fireworks. You are left with a feeling of amazement and awe, you can almost feel the warm lava coming out of the volcano, it is an unforgettable moment. Visit the island and its raw natural beauty. Do not miss the “Ifaisteia” event which is taking place usually in August or September of every year.

Ifaisteia 2017

This year the Ifestia fire show will take take place on the 16th of September 2017 at 20:30

After the show famous artist Fotini Darra will perform.

Facts and what to visit at Santorini’s Volcano

You arrived in Santorini and you, probably, are looking for the most interesting thing to do on the island. We suggest you that you should visit something that without it, Santorini would not have been what it is today. The volcano, so simple.

Photo above is from the latest volcano eruption back in 1950.

Some history about famous Santorini Volcano

Santorini volcanic history starts about 2 million years ago. Over the years there was an extensive volcanic evolution that can be divided into six main stages:

Akrotiri Volcanoes (approx. 2 mio – 600,000 years ago)

Cinder cones of the Akrotiri peninsula (around 600 – 300 ka)

Peristeria Volcano (530 – 300 ka)

Products of the first eruptive cycle (360-180 ka)

Products of the second eruptive cycle (180 ka – 1613 BC)

Kameni shield (1613 BC – present)

Of course, the most well-known eruption was that the one took place in the Minoan time (about 1613 BC) and let to the extinction of the MInoan civilization.

Other historic eruptions that took place after the bronze age and play big part at today’s appearance of the island are the following:

197 BC (Palea Kameni)

46/47 AD (Palea Kameni that formulated Bankos Reef)

726 AD (Palea Kameni)

1570-1573 (perhaps only one year of the interval, Mikri Kameni, now part of Nea Kameni)

1707-1711 (formation of Nea Kameni)

1866-1870 (Nea Kameni)

1925-1928 (Nea Kameni)

1939-1941 (Nea Kameni)

In any case, all the volcanic activity gave the magical and iconic appearance of Santorini.

Excursion to Santorini’s volcano

One of the most famous things to do in Santorini, and you should include in your bucket list, is to organize an excursion to the volcano. It might be still an active volcano but don’t be afraid. It is not as scary at it once was.

How can I visit the volcano

You have to decide between multiple options. You may attend a boat tour or organize a sail tour or even a private tour. It’s really about to you and what you will really enjoy. One thing is sure that you will have the chance to visit and walk on an active volcano. We suggest you to ask the Esperas Hotel concierge service to help you on your decision and book something for you.

What should you visit

So let’s start our lovely excursion! Sailing towards the volcano, the view you are gazing at, from inside of the caldera is magnificent. You will admire it once again on your way back. Dont forget your camera to take a lot of pictures! First stop: Nea Kameni island. You will walk towards the crater of the famous volcano of Santorini. The scenery is amazing and breathtaking. Actually you are standing on a volcano!

Later on, you will move onto Palaia Kameni island and swim, if you wish, in the hot springs here.

Next, is Thirasia island where you will rest and enjoy the local delicacies. Later in the afternoon, you will get on board on your tour boat, for your safe return. Depending on the type of tour you have booked, you can complete your volcano tour by going up the steps from Ammoudi directly to the door of Esperas Hotel.

The tomato factory that turned into an art factory in Santorini

One of Santorini’s most popular products is the delicious and unique, cherry tomato. It is not just any tomato, it comes with a story. This product was the reason to construct a factory, that later was transformed into a museum. Today this cultural heaven is found almost 40km from Esperas Hotel. We will unfold the history and when you visit us, we will give you a taste of the Santorini Tomatini and give you the directions to visit the Tomato Industrial Museum and the Santorini Arts Factory.

A Tomato Factory

The seeds of this particular sort of tomato arrived to Santorini in the 19th century, the origin however is in debate. Some say that a Catholic Monk, first introduced and cultivated the tomato to the Santorinians and others that it came from the Suez region with the sailors of the time. It is a unique product, not found anywhere else in the world. The volcanic soil and the pumice stone assist its growth, because they hold the moisture they need to grow as the cherry tomato of Santorini is not irrigated.

The distinctive sweet taste made it very popular and the whole island was working for its production. In 1915 Dimitrios Nomikos, who saw a potential in this product and went into producing the tomato paste. The Nomikos family built the first canning factory in the Balkans, in Monolithos. In the 1950s, there are 9 factories fully operational on the island. This little gem of nature gave the island an economic boost. However, the earthquake in 1956 left a mark on the tomato production in Santorini. Most of the crops were destroyed and a lot of people fled the island. Even though the main Nomikos factory was not damaged, there was not enough manpower to restore the production. The economy shifted in the coming years and tourism began to grow. People began to work for this industry and the tomato first tomato factory stopped all operations in 1981.

The Arts Factory

Today, the Tomato Canning Factory has been transformed into a museum and the rest of the property into an events and cultural center. To this day, Nomikos family is the owner of this property which changed its purpose of existence. The love for culture and growth and the ability to adapt is the main characteristic of this land. Hence the building of the factory was transformed to the Industrial Tomato Museum instead of shutting down. Here one can travel back in history and learn how the cultivation, processing and production happened with machinery and tools of that period. One can even find handwritten notes, account books, the first labels and audiovisual material from people who actually worked in the factory.

The rest of the property is divided to an events place that hosts theatrical plays, exhibitions and concerts, a shop that sells objects designed by Greek designers. The Art Factory organizes also various educational events and conferences.

The introduction of the cherry tomato to Santorini, led to a great financial growth of the island. That was interrupted by the forces of nature, but the tomato production and factory supporting the locals simply changed. Tourism took over and the tomato factory became a factory for arts, supporting with its new role the growth of this island.

The growth continues and more people every year decide to visit our marvelous island. Make that choice for yourself as well and enjoy your stay the true Santorinian way, in Esperas hotel.

Famous antivirus company Kaspersky Lab sponsors Akrotiri Excavations

Unlocking Akrotiri’s secrets of the past

Kaspersky Lab the famous antivirus company announced that will sponsor a number of activities at the famous archeological site of Akrotiri. Specifically, the sponsorship will help various excavation activities and aims to help scientists and archaeologists to restore the excavation and conserve the spectacular wall paintings that are found at Minoan Ages ancient village. During your stay at Santorini and Esperas hotel, visiting Akrotiri’s archeological site and museum should be included in your bucket list. The sponsorship was announced at a press conference event that was held in Santorini’s Conference center Petros Nomikos. Present at the event was Eugene Karspersky from Karspersky Lab, Nikos Zorzos Mayor of Santorini, Christos Doumas Director of Akrotiri’s Excavations, Dora Vasilikou BoD member of the Athenian Archeological Society. The event was covered by many Greek and International journalists.

Eugene Kaspersky, Kaspersky Lab Chairman and CEO explained the importance of the work:

“Akrotiri is an absolutely remarkable site. It’s a treasure for the whole of humankind and there’s a threat it could disappear if it’s not preserved by archeologists. I believe it’s very important to continue exploring the site, as its excavation is likely to bring new artefacts to life. I’m very proud that we can support the research process as well as the preservation of this amazing place for future generations.”

Nikos Zorzos, Mayor of Santorini, during his speech he outpointed the significance of preserving Greece’s cultural heritage and praised Eugene Karspersky true interest for Akrotri’s archeological excavations. He also mentioned that in the near future he will anoint him as an honorary citizen of Santorini.

More details about the works that will take place in Akrotiri’s excavation you may find here

Images copyrights belong to Kostas Konstantinidis

Historical background of Akrotiri’s excavations

The original name of the excavated town is unknown and so it took the name Akrotiri from the modern village located near the excavation site.

The first excavation started in 1867 by French geologist F. Fouque. Later in 895-1900 the excavations were continued by German archeologist Baron Friedrich Hiller Von Gaertringen and brought to light the ruins of ancient Thera on Mesa Vouno.

The full value of the site was revealed by Greek archeologist Spyros Marinatos who started to work in 1967 and for 9 consecutive years. During this period he achieved to reveal the full extent of the town and the majority of what can the visitor see nowadays.

Esperas hotel is about 40km away from Akrotiri archeological site and its a 1h 30m hour driving distance by car or taxi.

Megaro Gyzi (or Gyzi Manor)

Megaro Gyzi: One of Santorini’s must-to-see museums

One of many Santorini attractions and museums that you may visit during your stay at Esperas Hotel is the Cultural Centre Megaro Gyzi (or Gyzi Manor) in Fira. It is a non-profit organization, founded in 1980 by the Catholic Diocese of Santorini. The main purpose of the Cultural Centre is the spiritual development, the cultural improvement of Santorini’s residents, but also of the whole Cycladic area in general. For that reason, the Cultural Center Megaro Gyzi organises various cultural events and installations such as painting, sculpture and photo exhibitions, musical events, theatrical plays, film showings and other events. Apart the various events that are organized you may also visit an exhibition of 6 permanent collections of old photos of Santorini from 1930 to 1956 by the internationally acclaimed photographer Vicentio Pintos, traditional local costumes of 16th to 19th century, original map engravings of the same period and selected documents of the Lay Files of the Catholic Diocese of Thira, paintings of Santorini by Vincentio and Pipitsa Pintos, a collection of paintings, with Santorini as the subject, donated by well-known Greek painters and an under development exhibition of Santorini Strata.

Whats makes really interesting the visit at Megaro Gyzi, is the building itself since it is a 17th-century old family mansion of exceptional architectural interest and beauty and it is one of the few remain old estates that survived the earthquakes of 1956. The Manor΄s front entrance decorates the Gyzi family crest. The Cyzi Manor is a structure of exceptional architectural interest and beauty, to which (following the 1956 earthquakes) only the basement remained, where the utility room of the old estate was. It is a unique building of its era in Santorini, since the ground floors develop around a patio, which attributes a distinctive architecture due to the inner open area created; this is partly covered with an elegant cross-shaped dome and partly uncovered.

With the support and contribution from the Catholic Diocese of Santorini it has been carefully restored in a way that it retains much of its original character in an effort to preserve those distinct features of the local architectural heritage. The building was modified minimally to meet the functional demands of a Cultural Centre accommodating exhibition space and facilities for cultural events.

In order to visit Megaro Gyzi from Esperas Hotel in Oia, you will need about a 20 minutes drive by taxi or car or about a 40 minutes ride with the local bus

Opening Hours: Monday – Saturday 10:00 – 22:00, Sunday: 10:00 – 16:00, except from public holidays.

For additional information and photos, you may visit Megaro Gyzi’s website and Facebook Page

8 Secret Facts About Santorini

Whether you’ve had the privilege of visiting Santorini—aka one of the most romantic islands in the world—or not, you probably know what it looks like. Photos of vibrant blue waters overlooked by whitewashed stone homes nestled above pristine beachesare constantly fueling wanderlust around the world (guilty as charged). But, as with many other destinations around the world, Santorini is more than just a pretty face. The island has plenty to offer in the way of quirky historical facts, geographical travel obstacles, and must-sees that only the locals know about.

We’ve brought you the secrets of the Brooklyn Bridge, New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, world famous art, national parks, Sardinia, and Central Park. Now read up on some of the little-known facts behind one of the world’s favorite (or at least most photographed) islands:

1. There Are Not That Many Blue Rooftops on the Island

The same bright blue rooftops pop up in everyone’s photos of Santorini—enough to make you think the entire island is full of them. In reality, these photos are all variations on one vista (pictured here). You can find the most famous blue rooftops in Oia Town—you’ll know them when you see them.

2. Some People Think Atlantis is Located Around Santorini

Many believe you can find the mythical ruins of Atlantis buried underneath the sea around Santorini—and that the now tourist hot-spot was once actually known as the fabled location many explorers seek. The two destinations’ stories are strangely similar—Santorini was ruined by a series of eruptions thousands of years ago. Atlantis supposedly sunk deep under the sea after its people angered the gods. No matter where your belief lies, you can find your “paradise lost” in Santorini. We invited you to read the highly interesting blog article Santorini: Is this Atlantis?

3. Checking Into a Hotel Can Take You Hours

Santorini is full of stairs—there isn’t a better construction that can withstand the test of time and get vsitiors to the hotels with the best views. Travel blogger Suzy Guese shared a personal experience on the island over on her website, sharing that “By the time I finally reached my room, I wanted to collapse.” She went on to explain that many of the hotels send guests to a tourist center at the base of the island, who will call upon your arrival and requests carriers to come through and help with your bags. Pro tip: Factor in a couple of hours for actually getting up to your hotel.

4. There are Still Effects from a Tsunami Thousands of Years Ago

You can still see some of the after-effects of the super tsunami that once claimed nearby Crete and created the archipelago system that is Santorini. Scientists recently discovered a layer of seabed 65 feet below the water’s surface that features pebbles and rocks with mollusks and other organisms oriented in the same direction (proving strong currents of water passing over an area very quickly).

5. The Entire Island is a Volcanic Rock

Santorini exists because of a giant event called the Minoan Eruption—one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the history of Earth. Santorini and its surrounding islands were created after a number of eruptions that spanned several hundred thousand years. The original volcano would erupt, slowly fill with magma and create a brand new volcano that would erupt and repeat the process. These leftover bits of volcanic landscape now make up Santorini and its surrounding islands.

6. Early Santorinians Slept in ‘Cave Houses’

To best withstand the weather, Santorinians would create homes directly inside the island’s volcanic walls. You can still stay in some of the modern takes on the traditional structures—but they’re much more luxurious than they were thousands of years ago.

7. Local Wine Supposedly Tastes Better Thanks to the Island’s Volcanic Landscape

The volcanic landscape offers an interesting environment for agriculture, and their local wine is known around the world for its unique taste. The land on Santorini is called “aspa,” and is made up of volcanic ash, pumice stone, and small pieces of solidified sand and lava. This combination leaves out most of the nutrients we’re used to expecting in soil, but is rich in minerals. Rainfall is very minimal, making these wines relatively hard to get. Aside from rain, growing areas receive moisture from a strange phenomenon called sea fog—a mix of air from the active volcano and the surrounding area.

8. Santorini Has ‘Secret’ Hot Springs

Well, they may not be entirely secret considering the entire island is a volcanic rock, but they aren’t as well known as Iceland’s hot spring lagoons, that’s for sure. You’ll know when you’re swimming into the island’s warmer waters by the color change—the vibrant blue turns to a murky brown.

Anedossa Santorini’s Magic Fog

Santorini’s magical phenomenon

Anedossa is a local natural phenomenon which is generated by the temperature difference between the volcano and Santorini island, especially when west winds are blowing. It looks like fog or smoke rises abruptly from the caldera spreading onto the rest of the island and then dissolves. If you are lucky you will experience this unique phenomenon during your stay at Esperas Hotel.

Because of the lack of rain at Santorini, anedossa is beneficial for the island, as it provides the necessary humidity to the vines which produce the marvelous Santorinian wine. Besides being extremely useful, this local phenomenon is also very fascinating, almost sacred. When this white fog, like a group of hasty little clouds, is climbing up the island it seems like playful, cute, little spirits have came to the island to play. And when the white fog has spread around the island and sat down, you understand that the whole nature has silenced. Most probably, because, nature welcomes the beneficial touch of anedossa. Dedicate, only a few minutes of your time to observe this unique natural phenomenon. Walk around while having the fog at your feet, around your ankles. You will feel as if you are walking on the clouds of a magical kingdom. Which is not so far from reality! Santorini is a magical kingdom.

The Kasteli and Goulas Tower of Emporio

One of Santorini’s attractions that you may visit is the Kasteli of Emporio (Kasteli means castle). It is located about 20km (about 30 min driving) away from Oia and Esperas Hotel. The Kasteli of Emporio is one of the 5 Kastelia that you may find in Santorini. The rest are located in Oia, Skaros, Akrotiri and Pyrgos. Kastelia were built during 15th century during Venetian occupation and their main purpose was to protect inhabitants from the biggest threat of that time, pirate attacks like Hayreddin Barbarossa who raided Santorini at 1537.

The Emporio Kasteli’s architecture is stunning and it has been preserved in very good shape since a lot of its buildings have been restored even though they are not populated at all times.

After entering the front gate you can see multiple narrow alleys that formulate a small labyrinth with nearly vertical stairways as well as a lot of doors one next to the other, bridges among the houses, arches and domes, all built gracefully with volcanic materials. The indistinct shapes and figures and the medieval structures all around the place are very impressive. This castle was also used as a fort back then.

One of Kastelia’s main characteristics are the big towers called Goulas (from the Turkish word koules) that had multiple floors and were considered as inhabitant’s last shelter in case of attack. Goulades were situated either within (as in Oia and Akrotiri) or outside (as in Fira and Emporio) of the kastelia and acted as observatories for preventing the biggest threat of that time, pirate attacks. The Goulas of Emporio is located in the north part of Emporio’s village and was connected with the Kasteli through a tunnel. Within the Goulas tower used to be a small chapel dedicated to the founder of the Abbey of Patmos Christodoulos. Goulas was built at the same time with the Kasteli (around 15th century) by the monks of Agios Ioannis of Theologou in Patmos and considered as a glebe of Patmos island which was originally owned by the Dargenta family who were descents of Romanos Argyros, a byzantine Emperor. The Dargenta family owned also the Kasteli of Oia until 1579, when it passed to the Ottomans for 250 years.
