Art and Culture activities in Santorini

art and culture events in santorini

Santorini is a place of indisputable beauty. During your stay at Esperas hotel, it is guaranteed that you will feel rejuvenated and relaxed under the colourful Santorini skies. Whether you are staying in our Studios, Cave Houses or Honeymoon Suites you will have the opportunity to enjoy stunning views of the Aegean Sea, and to witness unforgetable sunsets.
Nonetheless, the island has a lot more to offer than its beauty. Santorini’s rich cultural past has been followed by a vibrant artistic present, allowing the island’s visitor to attend a variety of contemporary art exhibitions and cultural events. You may choose among music concerts, performance spaces, cultural festivals and modern galleries.

Let’s take a look at some contemporary cultural events that you could enjoy while staying at our hotel.

Ifestia Festival
As you are enjoying the view from your room’s private terrace, you will notice the unique texture and colour of Santorini’s land. The unique landscape of Santorini is due to a volcanic eruption that took place in the mid-second millennium BCE. The eruption is to be considered one of the largest volcanic eruptions on Earth. On the 15th of September thousands of Fireworks erupt on Santorini’s skies in celebration of the volcanic explosion. You can enjoy the fireworks while you can also attend the artistic events of the Ifestia festival, including a re-enchantment of the volcanic explosion.

Megaron Gyzi Festival
This festival is hosted at the Gyzi Mansion which is located in the centre of Fira.
It takes place during the whole summer season. It includes theatrical events, lectures but mostly focuses on music concerts. The musical events are both international and Greek. Among others, live music shows include contemporary Greek music, classical guitar, cello performances, Cretan lyra and Jazz music.

The International Music Festival of Santorini
When it comes to live music Santorini has a lot more to offer. If you enjoy listening to Jazz but also appreciate classical music, do not miss the Santorini International Music festival. It has been taking place for more than 40 years in the Petros M. Nomikos Conference Centre, a historic building with excellent acoustics.
Each September, both tourists and locals are able to experience elegant performances by chamber orchestras, well known choirs, choirs of Byzantine music, jazz and tango groups or classical violin and piano musicians.

Santorini Arts Factory Events

-Industrial Museum:
This unique venue used to be a tomato factory and it has now evolved into an artistic hub. It is considered to be the core of Santorini’s cultural activity. During a visit at this unique space, you can explore the old factory which has now turned into an Industrial Tomato Museum. The museum allows you to travel back to the industrial past of Santorini and learn all about the production methods of Santorini’s most valued product, the tomato.

-Music festival:
This historic space has also been transformed into a contemporary performance venue. Santorini Arts Factory, hosts a variety events where Greek and international artists perform attracting both young and mature audiences. It has hosted Jazz and Blues festivals, Urban and traditional Greek music concerts, video art festivals, flamenco and contemporary dance events. Non-matter the genre of the event you attend, the factory’s unique architecture and its vibrant energy will leave a lasting impression on you.

-Workshops and Exhibitions:
The space also hosts contemporary art exhibitions as well as workshops for adults and children. Some of the activities include songwriting workshops, marionette doll workshops, painting exhibitions for children and Greek shadow theatre workshops.

Contemporary art galleries

After spending the day at the beach and before you enjoy a luxurious dinner at our Ombra restaurant, why not spend some time exploring the island’s contemporary art galleries? Usually, visitors spent most of their time becoming familiar with the archaeological and transitional aspects of Santorini. While the island’s rich history is worth exploring, so is its artistic present. Santorini’s modern art galleries are filled with inspiring work by resident artists and vibrant new exhibitions.

S.M.A.G Spira Marble Art Gallery, Pyrgos
Here you can find unique marble Sculptures, housed in an intriguing building that dates back to 1914.

MΑΤΙ
This gallery exhibits an extraordinary approach to visual art and sculpture exploring human behaviour and human interaction with nature. It carries out studies, organizes exhibitions, installations and projects.

Santorini Photo Tour – Black and White Photography

At a time when we use our phones to take hundreds of pictures during our vacations, photographs become more about quantity than quality. This experience will help you re-evaluate the idea of photography. Join an expedition that will provide you with all the knowledge you need to produce strong architectural and landscape photos. This photo-tour is a great way to learn new skills. It will also leave you with a tangible and artistic souvenir. The shape of the island’s land will be on the picture and the colours of the sky will always remain in your memory.

We know that relaxing at Esperas unique cave pool while gazing the caldera will take up most of your time while in Santorini. But Santorini’s beauty derives as much from its majestic landscapes as it does from its vibrant cultural platform.
